Richard Schnap- A Poem

BELOW THE WHEELS

She said she spent the night
Under a bridge and hadn’t eaten
For two days as she stared up at me
With eyes like burnt-out light bulbs

I offered her a dollar
And she managed a toothless Thank You
As she sat there on the sidewalk
As if she was fused into it

The next day on the news
I heard the city had cleared out
All the homeless who were living
In camps underneath the bridges

And I didn’t care if she spent
The money on beer or crack
If that’s what it took to dream
Beneath the cold circles of stars
