Jennifer Lagier- A Poem & Photo

Bubba Burgers

I head north, cross a one lane bridge,
descend to taro fields, kudzu,
philodendron smothered palms,
make my annual pilgrimage
for greasy beef at Bubba Burgers.

Roosters and mourning doves
queue up for fried crumbs
dropped by diners at outdoor tables.
I munch and swallow succulent poison,
observe taut Hanalei surfers, sleek wahines,
feel fat cells multiply, my arteries harden.
